More people catching buses

09 September 2014

More shelter for waiting passengers and improved information about bus times may have encouraged more people to use buses in Jersey.

LibertyBus have issued figures for the year up to June 2014 which show an increase of 8.8% in passenger numbers over the same period for the previous year.

Consulting people

LibertyBus, working with the Transport and Technical Services Department (TTS), has been making continual improvements to the service since it took over the service at the start of 2013.

There is better service frequency on certain popular routes now. Also, because it consults people regularly, LibertyBus has been able to introduce changes to the network and timetable that reflect what people want from a bus service.

TTS has increased the number of bus shelters for waiting passengers. There are now more than 50 across the Island. More will be added as budgets allow, both by TTS and by developers through planning requirements.

More timetable information

People can also find out about bus times more easily. TTS provides timetable information at 120 stops now - up 50 per cent on a year earlier.

Minister for Transport and Technical Services, Deputy Kevin Lewis said “I am really delighted that we are now seeing the increase in number of bus passengers which we have been working so hard to achieve. We set LibertyBus the clear objective of growing bus ridership and they have delivered an increase of nearly 9% so far which is great news.”
