Pollution incident at Bel Royal

05 March 2015

Islanders using the beach at Bel Royal are being asked to be aware of signs which have been put up as a precautionary measure today (Thursday 5 March) following a report of a small pollution incident close to the outfall outlet.

Environmental Health officers are advising people to avoid the area while the content of a liquid substance found on the beach is analysed. The exact content and origin of the liquid is currently unconfirmed, however it has a strong diesel smell. Members of the public are advised not to let dogs or horses walk through the liquid, or drink it.

Department of Environment staff are trying to establish the source of the pollution and have asked householders and businesses in Bel Royal to check their oil tanks for any signs of a leak. They are liaising with Environmental Health officers to determine whether further action is required. The pollution hotline is 709535 or email envprotection@gov.je.
