Support for deposit scheme users

05 October 2015

Tenants and landlords will be able to get advice from Jersey charity Community Savings when the new tenancy deposit scheme launches in November.

The deposit scheme providers, Mydeposits Jersey, have teamed up with the charity to make sure that face-to-face advice and guidance is available for anyone who needs it.

Under the new scheme, new tenants will pay their deposits as usual to their landlords, who must then pass the deposit on to Mydeposits Jersey for safekeeping within 30 working days.

Community Savings, based in Commercial Street, will provide a town location for people to visit for advice and guidance on tenancy deposit protection. Alternatively people can use the Mydeposits Jersey website or a telephone call centre.

Community Savings is a local charity which supports people who are financially or socially disadvantaged.

Accessible scheme for the community

Housing Minister Deputy Anne Pryke said: ““The decision for Mydeposits to team up with the Community Savings, is a great example of how government, business and the community can work together for the benefit of Island residents.

“Mydeposits Jersey understand that the success of the scheme in the Island depends on it being visible and accessible in the local community and having a local office presence will help to do this and ensure that the scheme is suited to the needs of the local rental market.”

The tenancy deposit protection scheme starts on 2 November.

The scheme aims to give tenants greater confidence that the money they have paid is being held securely and will be repaid smoothly at the end of an agreement.
