More people travelling through Jersey's ports

22 January 2015

More than 2.2 million air and sea passengers travelled through Jersey's ports in 2014, an overall increase of more than 90,000 on 2013 figures.

In December 2014, Jersey Airport recorded an increase in passenger numbers for the sixth consecutive month, with a total 100,152 travellers through the terminals. By the end of 2014, more than 1.47 million passengers had travelled through the airport, 3.1% more than in 2013. A particular increase in passenger numbers from London was due to daily flights to Gatwick by British Airways and the introduction of easyJet onto the route at the end of March 2014.

More than 786,000 sea passengers travelled through the harbour in 2014, an overall increase of 6.1% on 2013. Although there was a slight dip in UK passenger numbers, both the inter-island and French routes showed increases.

The Minister for Economic Development, Senator Lyndon Farnham, said “Despite the economic pressures we continue to face, it is encouraging to see that year-end figures for both air and sea passengers appear to be heading in the right direction. It also proves that passenger demand can lead to an increase in capacity, as demonstrated by the success of the Gatwick route. 2015 will continue to be a challenge for us but I have every confidence that the route development programme, implemented so successfully by Ports of Jersey, will continue to pay dividends, which will be of great benefit to the vitally important tourism and business economy.”
