Price Comparison Report June 2015

​​​The Price Comparison Report examines the rate at which prices have changed by looking at the behaviour of the groups and sections that constitute the Retail Prices Index in each jurisdiction. 

Additionally, direct comparisons of prices are made where possible in order to give an indication of relative price levels.

Price movements (June 2015)

Price movements were:

  • over the ten-year period from 2005 to 2015, the overall increase of the RPI in Jersey (30%) has been similar to that in Guernsey (32%) and to that of the RPIJ  in the UK (28%)
  • during the twelve months to June 2015 the RPI increased by 0.9% in Jersey and by 1.9% in Guernsey, over the same period RPIJ increased by 0.4% the UK

Price levels (June 2015)​

​Direct food price comparisons show that:

  • fresh fruit and vegetables were, respectively, about a third and two-fifths more expensive in Jersey than in the UK
  • meat was, on average, a sixth more expensive in Jersey than in the UK

The mean retail price of:

  • alcohol was higher in Jersey than in the UK
    • ​​​by 58p​​ for a pint of bitter
    • ​by 46p for a pint of lager
  • ​ciga​rettes was lower in Jersey than in the UK, by £1.25 for a pack of 20 cigarettes
  • ​​​unleaded petrol and diesel was lower in Jersey than in the UK, by 4p and 11p per litre, respectively
The pre-tax prices of alcohol, tobacco and motor fuels were higher in Jersey than in the UK in June 2015. 

The mean pre-tax of:

  • ​​a pint of bitter and a pint of lager was almost £1 higher in Jersey than in the UK
  • a nip of whisky was 60​p higher in Jersey
  • cigarettes was 14p per pack of 20 cigarettes higher in Jersey than in the UK
  • petrol and diesel was higher in Jersey than in the UK by around 20p per litre
