Recycling robot on the move

18 August 2015

On Tuesday 1 September, Mr Robot will be standing down from his duty of welcoming customers to the Household Recycling Centre at Gate 4 Bellozanne.

Mr Robot was built from waste electrical items in August 2012 by Jersey artist Ian Rolls to help Transport and Technical Services raise awareness about the importance of not throwing old and broken electrical items in the bin, but recycling instead.

Since then, Mr Robot has travelled all over the island making a number of appearances including Jersey Live and at several schools before making his home at the Household Recycling Centre.

Traffic management

The space he currently occupies is required for new traffic management measures which will improve the site for customers at busy times.

Transport and Technical Services Recycling Manager Emma Richardson-Calladine said "Mr Robot will be missed from the Household Recycling Centre but he will be disassembled and all of his electrical parts will be sent to the UK for specialist recycling. He has been a huge success and we hope to create something equally engaging in a future campaign, watch this space!"

The department did consider offering Mr Robot a new home, either elsewhere at the Household Recycling Centre or on another site but, due to Mr Robot’s age and fragility, he would not survive the move.
