Improvements to sewage treatment works

24 August 2015

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is submitting a planning application to excavate part of a hillside at Bellozanne to make space for the new sewage treatment works.

Last year the States agreed that the sewage treatment works at Bellozanne should be replaced as the current plant is old, in constant need of costly repairs and unfit for the future.

As sewage treatment needs to take place continuously, there has to be sequential replacement of the old plant with the new one. Consequently, more space is needed to build alongside the existing plant. Doosan Enpure, the contractor appointed by TTS, is currently working on the design of the new plant.

This planning application has been submitted before the main Sewage Treatment Works' application to allow the larger site, near the former household recycling centre, to be prepared. About 70,000 cubic metres of hillside will be excavated and the stone will be sent to La Collette for reuse. Adjacent woodland will be preserved as far as possible and a wildlife corridor will be maintained. Two fields will be planted as woodland to compensate wildlife for any loss of habitat. A buffer to neighbouring properties will also be maintained and screening of the valley will be improved with field edge hedge planting.

Work is scheduled to start in 2016. Work will be carried out according to Environmental Health requirements and HGV traffic will be limited to off peak times.

A video showing the concept of the project can be viewed on the sewage disposal page of the States of Jersey website;
