Second workshop on university funding

09 November 2015

Following an initial meeting in July, students, parents and members of the general public are invited to attend a follow-up workshop to discuss higher education funding. The second event will take place on 23 November at Hautlieu School from 6pm.

This workshop will feed back on discussion points from the previous session and provide new information on the issues. It is open to anyone with an interest in higher education funding, whether or not they have been a student or parent and regardless of whether they attended the first workshop.

ESC Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said “This is an Island problem and the key is to get interested parties together to look for solutions. We have been working on a number of areas, with useful input from Deputy Vallois, and would like to provide an update ahead of taking a report to the States next year. We are particularly looking for input from the business and finance sectors.”

ESC and the Treasury are addressing these five points:
i. Analysis of the affordability of a student loan scheme;
ii. Potential for a parents’ saving scheme;
iii. A review of how the ESC higher education funding is allocated;
iv. Further development of on-Island provision and ‘Campus Jersey’;
v. Feasibility of closer higher education links with universities in European countries.

Background

In 2015 ESC has a budget of £9.1 million for supporting students through higher education. The current finance scheme is a means-tested grant that covers some of the living expenses and tuition fees. Each student must contribute the first £1,500 a year of tuition fees and a Jersey student loan of £4,500 is available for this purpose.
