Nominate your dog poo hotspot

24 May 2016

Following the success of the ‘Proud of you for picking up my poo’ 2015 campaign, eco active is re-launching the initiative for this summer.

Last year’s campaign, which reminds dog walkers of the importance of picking up after their dogs, reduced the amount of dog poo across Jersey by 88%. Eco active hopes to match or beat that result this year.

Islanders are being asked to nominate dog poo ‘hot spots’ so eco active can identify the worst affected areas. The team will then focus its efforts on improving those areas, as well as reducing the amount of dog poo currently not being picked up across the Island. The deadline for nominations is Sunday 5 June (World Environment Day).

Dog poo hotspots

Eco active programme manager Jane Burns said “The campaign was hugely successful in 2015 – people really got behind it. We’re relaunching for 2016, and one thing we know from people’s feedback is that there are still pockets of Jersey that are dog poo hotspots. We need people to let us know where they are and that information needs to be as specific as possible. They can tell us through our Facebook and Twitter accounts or by emailing ecoactive@gov.je.

“This year’s campaign will be officially launched at the Big Poo Pick Up where the 2016 hotspots will be announced. It'll take place on Sunday 5 June 10.00 – 12.00 at the upper car park, Mont a La Brune (sand dunes). Anyone who can spare a couple of hours to help us clean the sand dunes would be very welcome. At last year’s Big Poo Pick up we collected around 270 bags of dog mess.

“As with all litter campaigns,  it's important to remind people that it remains the responsibility of dog walkers to pick up after their dogs. We anticipate that some of the sites in the 2015 list will feature again. Unfortunately we know that open spaces like the sand dunes are still problem areas but it will be interesting to know where people would like us to focus our efforts."

Big Poo Pick Up

The face of the ‘Proud of you for picking up my poo’ campaign is a cartoon dog called Eric, designed by the local creative agency Freedom Media.

The Big Poo Pick Up also marks the start of ‘get eco active’, a week of activities designed to get people more actively involved in the environment, which begins on World Environment Day (5 June).
