New Assistant Minister at Education

​Deputy Anne Pryke is to replace Connétable Steve Pallett as an Assistant Minister of Education.

Connétable Pallett has political responsibility for sport, which was previously part of the Education Sport and Culture portfolio. To ensure continuity, he continued as an Assistant Minister at Education for a period until after sport moved to Economic Development in January 2016.

Connétable Pallett said "I did feel that it was important that I carried on for a short time at Education to ensure a smooth handover, especially in regards to the school sports facilities. We are now past the transition phase and, as it has been successful, it is the right time to step away from Education and concentrate on my other roles, which also include Environment and running the busy Parish of St Brelade. It's been a great experience being involved at Education and I am thankful that the team have been so supportive of me."

Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said "I would like to thank Constable Pallett for all the time and effort he put in on behalf of Education. It has been much appreciated and everyone has commented on the amount of focus and passion he put into his role, not just as the guardian of sport but also the part he has played in other areas, including the appeals hearings.

"In short, I'm sorry to see him go but am delighted to welcome Deputy Pryke. She is another hard-working, common-sense politician with a great deal of experience, and she will be an asset to our team."

Deputy Pryke said "Education, housing and health often work with the same families and the issues that affect the well-being of children are common to these three areas. My current and previous roles mean I have a perspective over more than one department. I hope this will prove valuable in promoting the best possible education for our children and young people."

Deputy Pryke is also the current Housing Minister. The other Assistant Minister at Education is Sir Philip Bailhache. The appointment, which has been approved by the Chief Minister in line with States of Jersey Law 2005, is effective immediately.
