To mark the Queen’s official 90th birthday, the Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Connétable Steve Pallett, is proposing to temporarily extend opening hours for pubs and bars on 10 and 11 June 2016.
The temporary amendment to the Licensing (Jersey) Law 1974 would allow pubs and bars to continue serving customers until 1am on the evenings of Friday 10 and Saturday 11 June 2016. This would align Jersey with England and Wales, where the same temporary extension has already been adopted.
The Assistant Minister will bring Regulations to the States to temporarily amend the Licensing Law to allow Category 1 (Taverners) licensed premises to serve alcohol until 1am on the nights in question. The proposed extension to opening hours will not affect other categories of premises covered by the Licensing Law, such as restaurants and nightclubs, which already have permitted opening times running up to or beyond 1am. Off-licences will also remain unaffected by the Regulations.
Connétable Pallett said: “As the UK Government has taken the decision to extend licensing hours on these nights, it seems appropriate to give the States an opportunity to allow Islanders the same chance to celebrate the Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.”
