Love Jersey - fault reporting app launched

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) is launching the public test phase of a new app and website called Love Jersey, which enables the community to report issues, quickly and easily, that need attention.  During this phase DfI will continue to improve the app and website based on feedback.

There are a whole range of issues, like potholes and fly-tipping for example, that can be reported through the system.  As it is often difficult for people to know which authority is responsible for what, DfI has worked with the Parishes to include them in the system as well.  As the app uses location data, it can determine whether the reports get sent to a Parish or to DfI. 

Although there is only the same level of resources to deal with the reports, the app allows better use of these resources by improved scheduling of the work and by reducing the amount of inspection necessary. 

DfI has developed ‘Love Jersey’, an eGov project, from an ‘off the shelf’ software system, Love Clean Streets, used by many Councils in the UK, and now customised to suit Jersey. It is the only app recommended by the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

Easy to use

The app is easy to use.  If someone spots something that needs attention, they can:

  1. open ‘Send Report’ and their location is automatically detected
  2. see other reports in the same area displayed, to see if the issue has already been reported
  3. take up to 3 photos of the problem
  4. choose a category from the list and provide a short written description
  5. save or send the report
  6. get an instant email acknowledgement that the report has been received.

The report then automatically goes to the relevant authority, i.e. DfI or one of the Parishes.  The report details are then assessed and the appropriate action is taken.  The app is only monitored during normal working hours, so it is not meant for emergency use.

Although the app’s primary use is for reporting, there is another good reason for downloading it onto mobile phones, as it provides links to a whole range of useful local information.

Deputy Eddie Noel, Minister for Infrastructure, said “This app brings us closer to the community and enables us to work together to get problems sorted.  We all love Jersey and want it to look at its best.  At DfI we will be making the best use of our resources to prioritise and keep Jersey looking good.”

Test phase

Although the app's been launched to the public, it's still in the testing phase and there may be a few teething problems to overcome, so DfI is interested in getting feedback from the public to help improve the system.  Comments can be sent by email to lovejersey@gov.je.

Connétable Len Norman, Chairman of the Comité des Connétables, said “The Parishes immediately agreed to be part of this app service.  Parishes often get reports from the public which actually require action by DfI and vice versa.  It is sometimes difficult to know what is a Parish responsibility and what comes under the remit of DfI.  This app makes it really easy.”
