Boat intercepted by French authorities

Jersey Customs and Immigration was informed by the French authorities last week that a number of migrants had tried to leave the French coast, from the Barneville-Carteret area, in a small boat. The French authorities successfully intercepted the vessel. They prevented the migrants from continuing with what could have been a hazardous journey and detained them for questioning.

There is a possibility that their intended destination may have been Jersey or Guernsey. The French authorities arranged patrols of their coast over the weekend and have since advised that the migrants have moved away from the Carteret area.

Jersey Customs and Immigration Service, together with the States of Jersey Police and honorary officers, have increased their vigilance and are closely monitoring the Island’s ports and other possible landing points.

Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, said “We are pleased that the French authorities acted so promptly. Jersey officials keep in regular contact with their counterparts in France, Guernsey and the UK, and I have every confidence that the Island’s authorities apply all the necessary vigilance in this important work."

The Assistant Home Affairs Minister, Constable Deidre Mezbourian, said “Jersey officials have worked through a number of scenarios involving potential migrant activity as a matter of precaution. They also continue to keep in close contact with the relevant authorities in our neighbouring jurisdictions.”
