French links strengthened by Paris show

25 February 2016

Jersey’s political and economic relationship with France will be reinforced by attendance at one of France’s major shows in Paris.

The Chief Minister and Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture will be attending the Paris International Agricultural Show (Salon International de l’Agriculture) that runs between 27 February and 6 March 2016.

The event is one of the world’s largest and most important agricultural shows. It attracts almost 700,000 people, including significant politicians.

Jersey has developed strong links with regional contacts in the Normandy region and this is the fourth year that Jersey has attended the event, and the third year of a partnership with the General Council of La Manche to work together at the show.

Links with France

During their visit, Ministers will meet the President of the Regional Council of Normandy (and former Minister of Defence) Hervé Morin, and the President of the Departmental Council of La Manche, Sénateur Philippe Bas.

The show provides a number of opportunities for Jersey, including
  • an opportunity to strengthen existing political, economic and cultural links with Normandy which foster relationships between Jersey and France at a regional and national level.

  • the opportunity to promote Jersey produce and the Jersey brand

  • the chance to identify export opportunities for Jersey products in a major market.

Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst said “This is the third year we’ve joined our La Manche counterparts at one of France’s most prestigious agricultural shows. It’s indicative of our firm and enduring commitment to the relationship Jersey enjoys with Normandy and to continuing efforts to sustain our important political, economic and cultural links with France.”

Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Senator Lyndon Farnham said “The Salon International de l’Agriculture offers us an excellent opportunity to build brand awareness of the Island, and to promote it as a tourist destination in a major marketplace. We’ll also be showcasing Jersey produce – a range of products will be promoted at the show, through tastings and promotional materials – and identifying possible export opportunities.”

Gin and sin

Visitors to the Jersey section of the stand will be able to enjoy a very Genuine Jersey cream tea or a cocktail hour aperitif made with Jersey gin (‘gin and sin’) in addition to tastings of many other local products.

Representatives from La Robeline Cider which produces cider and local apple brandy, will be attending the show.

Companies with products represented at the show include: Chilli Kitchen, Classic Herd, Heritage Jersey Apple Press, Jersey Dairy, Jersey Royal Company, La Crémière, La Mare Wine Estate, La Robeline Cider Company, Vienna Bakery.
