Weather radar dome seeks home

20 April 2016

The weather radar dome at La Moye will be replaced in June and the recycling team in the Department for Infrastructure and the Meteorological Department want to find it a new home.

The dome has been in use for the past 25 years but will be replaced as part of an upgrade to the Island’s weather radar.

The dome is made from approximately 48 GRP (glass reinforced plastic) connecting panels and is still in excellent condition. The departments are asking for expressions of interest from anyone who can re-use it in a way that benefits the local community.

Principal Meteorological Officer, Department for the Environment, John Searson, said "This is an exciting opportunity to own a piece of Jersey’s history. The dome has served us well for the past 25 years but we need to upgrade it so we can collect more detailed and accurate weather radar data."

Recycling Manager, Department for Infrastructure, Emma Richardson-Calladine, said "We would love to see the weather dome find a second home where it continues to provide a benefit to the local community. This is a great example of how to see waste as a resource and we are delighted that there is an opportunity for the Island to explore the reuse options."

More information about the opportunity to rehome the weather radar dome is available online and from the Meteorological Department. The deadline for expressions of interest is 5pm on Monday 16 May 2016.
