New members sought for Youth Panel

11 July 2016

Members of the public are being invited to apply for three posts on the Youth Court Panel.

The Youth Court is an important part of the Criminal Justice System in Jersey, dealing with criminal cases involving young people under the age of 18 years. The Court is made up of a Magistrate sitting with two members of the Youth Court Panel.

No formal qualifications are required, whether legal or otherwise, but the applicant must possess the highest integrity, a strong sense of fairness, sound common sense and be able to come to reasoned decisions. Youth Court Panel members are required by law to retire at the age of 60.

This is a voluntary role and the invitation for applications is made by the Bailiff, William Bailhache. Members of the Panel will be asked to sit in court approximately once a month (usually for one morning) and to attend one day’s annual training. Further court sittings are occasionally required.

The work of the Youth Court can be difficult but can also be very rewarding. If you are interested in applying to be a Youth Court Panel member and would like to find out more you are invited to meet the Magistrates and members of the Youth Panel on Tuesday 19 July for an informal discussion.

Anyone interested in the posts can contact the Magistrate's Court Greffier.
