Future of former nursing home site is decided

The future of the former Limes building in St Helier, which was closed as a nursing home in 2016, has been resolved.

Ministers have agreed an interim solution to use the Limes to accommodate key workers, principally junior doctors. Refurbishment work will take place in order to prepare the building, and it is anticipated that this work will be completed before the end of this year. In the longer term there are plans to use the site for affordable housing.

The decision to close The Limes was announced by the Health and Social Services Department in December 2015, with the last residents moving out at the end of March 2016. Having been used by HSSD since 1974, the building was ruled unfit for continued use as a nursing home, and residents were offered alternative residential options within the independent nursing care sector.

Minister for Housing, Deputy Anne Pryke, said "Affordable housing is something that continues to be much-needed in Jersey, and this solution means that we will have a greater supply in the future."

Minister for Health and Social Services, Senator Andrew Green, said "I'm very pleased that junior doctors will have an appropriate accommodation option in St Helier. Currently, many of our junior doctors reside at Westaway Court close to the General Hospital; there are plans to demolish Westaway Court and build a new facility which will be used for outpatient clinics – this is a significant part of the Future Hospital project.”

Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, said "We have had constructive conversations between Infrastructure, Health and Social Services, the Housing Minister and Andium Homes, and this has resulted in the decision about the future of the Limes, which I think is an excellent outcome for all concerned."
