Unspent 2017 budgets fund ongoing projects

01 May 2018

Departments across the States of Jersey underspent their 2017 budgets by £26 million, out of a total approved budget of £730 million.

Of the £26 million underspend, £12 million will remain with departments to fund ongoing projects.

These include:

  • Jersey pupil premium
  • a new IT system for Children’s Services
  • climate change risk assessment
  • Digital Jersey
  • online planning applications
  • data protection
  • police inspection
  • sports travel grants for clubs and associations
  • £5 million to help fund Health and Social Services in 2018
  • skills development for sectors like retail and construction
  • paying parish rates

£10.4 million of the unspent budgets will go into reserves and contingencies. Some of the money transferred into reserves will be used to fund the next stage in the restructuring of the public sector.

In March, after a comprehensive review, Mr Parker unveiled a new ‘one government’ structure for the organisation, and a number of projects are scheduled to start before the next Medium Term Financial Plan is debated. Temporary funding is needed so work can start on modernising Jersey’s public services.
