Children’s commissioner logo winner announced

The winner of the design a logo competition for Jersey’s new Children’s Commissioner has been chosen.

13-year-old Thomas Masterman’s design was chosen from more than 350 entries.

Explaining what his logo represented Thomas said “Everyone should have a fair say no matter who they are. Also we need to make kid’s lives better and more enjoyable and safe. My logo shows the Commissioner as the point at the top of the umbrella and the words say what her job is. All children in Jersey come under this regardless of background, religion or gender. The words show how the Commissioner will do her job.”

Entries were judged by the Youth Advisory Panel

The Children’s Commissioner and her team shortlisted the 350 entries down to 33, which were then handed over to the Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) for independent judging at St James Centre on Wednesday 28 March.

The eight members of the YAP reviewed all of the entries and cut it down to five before voting for their favourite.

The YAP said: “We really liked the umbrella, which to us represented protection and the words used represented the role of the Children’s Commissioner well. We were also impressed with the simplicity of the badge design and the use of bright colours made it eye-catching.”

Thomas, who attends Victoria College, will receive a £200 voucher tailored to his interest and will work with the design agency to bring the logo to life so it can be used on all Children’s Commissioner publications, materials and future website.

Jersey’s Children’s Commissioner, Deborah McMillan, said: “Congratulations to Thomas for such a symbolic logo for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner and also to our independent judges from the YAP who had the difficult task of choosing the winner out of so many fantastic and creative entries. There are so many talented children and young people in Jersey. And to celebrate and showcase this wonderful talent I am delighted to announce that all of the competition entries will go on display at the Jersey Library in St Helier between 9 and 15 April.”
