Children's legislation programme published

20 December 2018

Details of a children’s legislation transformation programme have been published today by the Minister for Children and Housing, Senator Sam Mézec.

The legislation programme, which covers thirty-nine different areas of policy, will deliver wide-ranging changes to laws that have an impact on children’s lives.

Senator Mézec said: “The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry found that we had failed over many years to prioritise the development of modern, fit-for-purpose children’s legislation in line with positive developments made elsewhere in the British Isles and beyond.

“This transformation programme will help achieve Jersey’s Children’s Plan outcomes, as endorsed by the Council of Ministers in November, and represents a far reaching programme of legislative change for the benefit of children, young people and their families.

“It demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that we put children and young people first, not only now, but well into the future.”

One of the central elements of the programme is to fully review and modernise Jersey’s education legislation.  The Minister for Education, Senator Tracey Vallois said: “I am absolutely committed to ensuring that, during my term as Education Minister, I bring forward proposals to reform our outdated Education Law.”
