GPs offer support to mother of baby left at the hospital

22 March 2018

Jersey GPs have joined the ongoing work to offer support to the mother who left her newborn baby boy at Jersey General Hospital on Sunday.

The mother has been urged to come forward so that checks on her mental and physical welfare can be carried out by medical professionals. The Primary Care Body for GPs on the Island has confirmed that there would be no charge to a mother who came to a GP surgery in this situation.

Dr Sarah Whiteman, Medical Director for Primary Care, said “We appreciate that for some people coming into a local surgery may be a less daunting experience than attending hospital, and GP colleagues have been very supportive during discussions about how they could help. The message to the mother, or anyone who knows her, remains the same – we are worried about your welfare and you should obtain expert help in order to ensure you’re able to recover as fully as possible. Any GP surgery would be prepared to see you, and please don’t worry about the cost – there would be no charge.”

The dedicated line to a senior Midwife from the Maternity Unit at the General Hospital remains available for the mother, her friends or family, to obtain advice and help. The line will be constantly monitored throughout the rest of the week and the coming weekend. It is: 07797 710885
