Minimum wage review underway

11 June 2018

The Employment Forum wants to hear your views about increasing the minimum wage from Monday 1 April 2019. The minimum wage in Jersey is currently £7.50 per hour and it applies to all employees over age 16.

Public views wanted

Each year the Forum asks the public to comment on what rates the minimum wage, the trainee rates and the maximum offsets for accommodation and food should be set at from 1 April the following year.

All of the responses that the Forum receives are combined with statistical information and data about the economy, as well as other relevant information and evidence. This helps the Forum to make its recommendation on the minimum wage.

Chair of the Employment Forum's view

Helen Ruelle, Chair of the Employment Forum, said: “Each year we encourage stakeholders to tell us their views, either in writing or in person. Employers who pay the minimum wage and employees who earn the minimum wage can provide us with valuable insight. From previous experience, we know that the minimum wage is most relevant for employers and employees in the hospitality and agriculture sectors. In order to ensure that our recommendation is appropriate, it is really important that people who are directly affected by minimum wage increases get in touch and tell us how this impacts on them. We provide an online survey and stakeholders are also welcome to give us their views in person at a private meeting with the Forum.”

The Forum's recommendation

During June and July, the Forum will collect responses from stakeholders. The Forum will then consider all of the evidence received, including the economic advice and the latest increases in average earnings and prices, and will present a minimum wage recommendation to the Social Security Minister in September 2018.

How to give your view

You can complete the survey on our consultation page. Copies can also be obtained by emailing the employment forum or phoning +44 (0) 1534 447203.

Respondents may also request a meeting with the Forum.

Responses to the consultation must be received by Wednesday 27 July 2018.
