New Prison Governor Appointed

​A new prison governor for the States of Jersey Prison Service has been appointed to take over from the current governor Bill Millar when he retires at the end of August.

Nick Cameron has been announced as the next Head of Jersey Prison Service and Prison Governor of La Moye, taking up his post on 13 August 2018.

Mr Cameron has 24 years’ experience governing prisons and leading other offender management services in Scotland, England, New Zealand and Australia. He was Governor of two prisons in Scotland and in Western Australia governed Australia’s largest prison with 1,470 offenders. Nick has also led Probation and Criminal Justice Healthcare services. His most recent role was deputy director of Justice and Immigration at Serco Group.
Before joining the Scottish Prison Service in 1994 as an Assistant Governor, he was a Captain in 29 Commando Regiment and served in the 1st Gulf War. Nick has a 1st Class Honours degree from Kings College, London and a Master’s degree from Edinburgh University.

Nick is married with two grown up daughters. He and his wife have previously walked the Jersey coastal path and enjoyed cycle holidays in Jersey.

Mr Cameron said: “I am delighted to be appointed to lead the States of Jersey Prison Service and Governor of La Moye. I look forward to working with colleagues across criminal justice and other government services, building on the great achievements Bill has led. The One Jersey strategy, also creates the opportunity to work closely across services to deliver better outcomes for offenders and enhance community safety.

"My wife and I are also looking forward to living in Jersey, and being part of the Island community.”

Mr Millar will retire as governor of La Moye prison, on 31 August, after more than 40 years in the prison service, working for ten years in Jersey and 30 years in the Scottish Prison Service.

During Mr Millar’s time in post the Jersey Prison Service won the Jersey CIPD Award for the Most Successful Change Management Programme in 2012. And Mr Millar received a Certificate of Commendation from the Minister for Home Affairs in 2013 for outstanding leadership and service to the Island of Jersey and was awarded an MBE in 2017.

Mr Millar said: "What I’ve enjoyed most about the role is having the autonomy to bring about significant change in the prison management structure and the prison regime. I have been very fortunate to have benefitted from great support from my senior management team and the Jersey Prison Service Association but also from successive Ministers and Chief Officers. I would not have received such accolades without the support and commitment of the managers and staff at La Moye prison.

“As retirement approaches, I am looking forward to spending more quality time with my wife and family and having much more control over my time."
