New service from Skills Jersey

19 July 2018

Skills Jersey has launched a new ‘Skills Coaching’ service to motivate children and young people to engage with their learning and provide them with an insight into various workplaces.

Skills Coaches would also like to hear from parents or guardians of 16-18 year olds who are not in education, employment or training to discuss ways of supporting them.

Skills Coaching uses employer insights, workplace visits and one to one coaching and mentoring to:

• enable students to make connections between academic studies and employment/careers
• understand where learning and education fits in the bigger picture of their future
• motivate students to re-engage with education
• give an insight into the world of work
• Support transitions in education and work for students with additional needs

Penny Shurmer, Director of Enterprise Skill Development, said: “This service aims to help young people explore and develop their interests and discover their strengths. Skills Coaching should help them to see links more clearly between the world of work and their education.”

Jeremy Maçon, Assistant Education Minister, said: “The Skills Coaching service delivers what many have been calling for opening up our children minds to new prospects and career paths. This is a fantastic opportunity for all of our students”

Professionals working within education are able to refer students who might need this service to achieve their potential.

Skills Jersey’s coaches will be joining the Primary Mental Health team from the Children, Young People, Education and Skills Department and Young People from Youthful Minds, Mind Jersey's youth participation group, at the Library this summer, providing a pop up stand on:

Tuesday 31 July 10.30am-12pm
Tuesday 14 August 10.30am-12pm
Tuesday 28 August 10.30am-12pm

Skills Coaches will provide information about Skills Jersey’s services and the opportunities open to young people in education, including employer insights, work experience and careers advice.
