Hospital neighbourhood forum second meeting

26 July 2018

A second discussion forum for people living and working near Jersey’s proposed new hospital is planned for next week.

Residents and workers are invited to the second hospital neighbourhood forum to consider practical issues arising from the planning, early and enabling works, and building of a new hospital for Jersey.

It will take place on Wednesday 1 August 2018 from 6 to 8pm at St Paul’s Centre. Everyone living or working near the existing hospital is invited, as well as the Connétable of St Helier and town deputies.

Approximately 50 people attended the first neighbourhood forum held recently. Among the issues raised by attendees were:

  • Road safety in Lewis Street
  • Traffic calming and safety and accessibility for people with disabilities in Kensington Street
  • Parking for nearby residents
  • Traffic in Newgate Street
  • Noise disturbance
  • Requests for assurance about the potential for structural disturbance to properties in the area

At the second meeting, the Future Hospital team will respond to the issues raised and report on actions and progress.

If people can’t make the forum but would like to attend future meetings or be kept informed by a neighbourhood newsletter, they can email futurehospital@gov.je.

Background

The current hospital is no longer fit for purpose and needs replacing. An outline planning application (PP/2018/0507) to build a new safe, sustainable and affordable hospital for Jersey on the existing General Hospital and Westaway Court was submitted to planning officers in April 2018. It followed States Assembly approval for the location, the budget and the method of funding.

A public inquiry into the outline planning application and a high-level, planning-based assessment of alternative sites will start on 17 September 2018 at St Paul's Centre.

Ongoing work and hospital board review

Work on the hospital project is continuing in tandem with a short Hospital Policy Development Board assurance review of the current site to ensure the choice that has been made is sound and based on evidence.
