Snow and high winds expected to cause disruption

28 February 2018

Islanders are being warned that a combination of overnight snowfall and gale-force winds could cause blizzard conditions tonight (28 February 2018), with an accumulation of 4cm to 8cm of snow and significant drifting expected by morning. The possibility of further snowfall and freezing rain later tomorrow mean that conditions are likely to remain hazardous. Islanders are advised to make journeys only when necessary.

All secondary and primary schools, and Highlands College, will be closed tomorrow (1 March 2018). Pupils and parents should continue to monitor @JerseyEducation Twitter feed for updates.

For current information on flights, check www.jerseyairport.com and @JERairport Twitter feed.

The Department for Infrastructure will deploy six vehicles to begin spreading salt on the roads from midnight tonight. DfI has given permission for the contractors working in the Tunnel overnight to reopen the road in the event of snow, so that motorists are not forced to use the higher ground of Mount Bingham.

The parish of St Helier will be deploying a team to pre-treat some roads from 10pm tonight and will continue throughout tomorrow. They will also allocate teams to clear snow and spread salt on parish roads and pavements.

In terms of public transport, school buses will not be running tomorrow (1 March 2018), while main bus network services will function as far as possible. For the most current information on routes and services, Islanders are advised to check the @LibertyBusje Twitter feed or use the TrackMyBus app https://m.gov.je/Bus/Tracker

Motorists are advised to avoid travelling if possible.
