States of Jersey staff survey

The results of the first comprehensive staff survey since 2008 have been published. The One Voice survey was commissioned by the States of Jersey’s Chief Executive, Charlie Parker, as soon as he started work, in order to understand the feelings of staff. It was open to everyone who works for the States of Jersey, whether full time or part time, a long-term employee, a temporary employee or a volunteer.

62% of staff (4,321 people) completed the survey, which asked what they think about working for the States of Jersey, and how they feel about their job and working environment. It was run independently by ORC International, who have presented a summary of the findings to senior leaders and managers.

The results

The engagement score, which quantifies how ‘emotionally connected’ staff are to the States of Jersey, is 50%. This is lower than for comparable UK public sector organisations, and there are significant variations between departments.

There are some positive findings

  • 58% say they are proud to work for the States of Jersey
  • 67% say their team inspires them to do their best work
  • 91% say they have the skills to do their jobs effectively
  • 88% feel the work they do is worthwhile
  • 87% say that when something unexpected comes up at work, they usually know who to ask for help

There are also some results that show where improvement is needed

  • 25% say the executive management team communicates a clear and compelling vision for the States of Jersey
  • 28% believe senior managers in their department will take action on the results from this survey
  • 32% feel their pay is reasonable compared to people doing a similar job in other organisations
  • 36% feel a strong personal attachment to the States of Jersey
  • 36% would recommend the States as a great place to work
  • 51% say their department motivates them to contribute more than is normally required in my work.

Chief Executive, Charlie Parker, said “This is the first survey of views across the whole of government for almost a decade. It provides valuable insights into what colleagues are thinking and feeling, and is an important baseline against which we can judge our progress.

“The survey results show that there are clear issues we need to address. There are variations between, and within, departments that we will need to explore. We now need to discuss these results in our teams, sections and departments and identify together where the priorities are and what action we need to take. I have assured colleagues that we will learn from these results and take positive action over the coming months and years.” ​
