States invests in Digital Skills Academy

21 December 2018

The financing has been approved for a new academy, where Jersey’s professional digital skills can be developed.

The Minister for Treasury and Resources, Deputy Susie Pinel, has approved up to £1.7 million to finance the creation of the Digital Skills Academy, and the expansion of the Digital Hub, by Digital Jersey.

The academy will offer degree-level qualifications as well as short courses designed to support professionals already in the industry and islanders wanting careers in the sector. Digital Jersey will work in close partnership with Skills Jersey to ensure that the Digital Skills Academy is connected to wider education provision.

The Minister with responsibility for digital, Senator Lyndon Farnham, said: “I am delighted that this funding has been agreed. The digital sector has tremendous potential and, in order to capitalise on the opportunities presented by changes in technology, we need to ensure we are producing the right skills.

“By allowing us to target current skills shortages, this money will help accelerate the growth of the island’s digital businesses - creating jobs and boosting Jersey’s productivity. The funding will also provide space for SMEs, develop skills in schools and foster innovation in local digital firms through research partnerships.”

The money has been approved as one of the second tranche of essential projects to be approved by the Treasury Minister.
