PaybyPhone app becomes main form of parking payment

13 December 2018

More than half of all motorists are now using the PayByPhone payment system when they park, and almost all users would recommend it to a friend.

PayByPhone enables drivers to pay for parking in States car parks and on many streets using the app on their mobile phone without having to buy pay cards in advance. They can also extend their parking without having to return to their vehicle.

A survey by PayByPhone found that nine out of ten PayByPhone users in Jersey would recommend the app to a friend. Users also rated the app, on average, 9.3/10 for ease of use and 9/10 for ease of registration.

Parking Control Manager, Paul Gibaut, said: “This year, around 52% of parking has been paid for through PayByPhone, and we have had positive feedback from islanders. It has helped us to achieve our objective of making the parking process as simple and efficient as possible. We have already seen a reduction in the use of scratch cards in favour of this environmentally friendly alterative.”

Since it was rolled out between September and November of last year, the number of drivers using the online system has steadily increased and now, every week day, there are approximately 3,000 transactions in Jersey through PayByPhone.

The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said: “This initiative is a demonstration of the States putting the customer first by providing them with a digital service which is easy to use and reduces the time and administrative requirements when parking, and I am delighted that so many people have started using it.”

Anyone who has not yet signed up and who would like to use PayByPhone can register and download the app.
