Public invited to Esplanade Quarter plan workshop

17 January 2018

Islanders with an interest in the planning and design of Jersey’s Esplanade Quarter are invited to take part in a second community workshop.

The existing 2008 planning framework for the Esplanade Quarter area is being updated.  It follows a recommendation by an independent planning inspector and the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel. The two workshops will help the Department of the Environment’s planners develop an interim plan, with a fully updated one to follow in due course.

St Helier

The second workshop will build on progress made by planners, politicians, community members and stakeholders last November. Attendees will consider the future planning and design objectives for the Esplanade Quarter, including La Route de la Liberation, and its relationship with St Helier more broadly.

Design Council, an impartial, independent design body which is supporting the Department of the Environment’s work to create an integrated, distinctive and sustainable planning framework, will lead the workshop.

Character

Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce said ‘the first workshop was really productive - people made serious and thoughtful contributions around issues such as community involvement in the planning, better connectivity; the importance of creating an attractive and user-friendly place with open, accessible public spaces; and creating an area that reflects Jersey’s character.

'This next workshop takes us on a stage further and again, we appeal to people with an interest to get involved; their views are integral to the project’s success and will ensure we produce an imaginative, inclusive and workable interim plan.’

Public event

Re-imagining the Esplanade Quarter: Design Principles and the Wider Context takes place on Wednesday 31 January 2018, 10.30 – 15.30pm (light lunch provided) at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Rue de L'Etau St Helier JE2 3WF, St Helier. To attend, or to find out more email Principal Planner (Policy) Alistair Coates  or telephone +44 (0) 1534 445508.

Until a new Esplanade Quarter Master Plan is agreed, planning applications that are submitted for further development on the St Helier Waterfront are being assessed on the basis of the policies that currently exist.
