Stirring up creativity for half term

23 October 2019

Children and young people will spend next week honing their digital and culinary skills, as part of three half-term camps run by Skills Jersey.

The two chef camps will be at the Highlands Culinary Arts Academy, with access to professional kitchens, while the Digital Creators two-day camp, organised in conjunction with Digital Jersey and Prosperity 24/7, will give young people a taste of how technology can help them in their everyday lives.

The first day of the informal Digital Creators programme, which has limited spaces, will be a mixture of tutorials to Office 365 apps, and attendees will get hands on by applying what they learn to real-life scenarios. On the second day students will put what they have learnt into a creative project and pitch their ideas to the rest of the group.

The Budding and Aspiring Chef camps will run practical hands-on service and cooking skills exercises that will include some Halloween twists. Students will leave with new skills, increased confidence in the kitchen and a better understanding of nutrition. The students will prepare, cook and serve dishes, promoting their appreciation for the food and the hospitality sector, as well as taking part in a full restaurant service with real customers.

The Assistant Minister for Education, Deputy Jeremy Maçon, said: “These are great opportunities for our young people as they can gain both technical and life skills and inspire their desire to learn in a different environment. Thank you to our partners for putting on these courses.”

The Digital Creators workshop costs £5 and is on Monday 28 November and Tuesday 29 November. The Aspiring Chefs workshop is from Thursday 31 October to Friday 1 November and costs £10.
