A campaign to recruit a high-profile candidate to help provide the greatest level of safety and protection for children, young people and families, in Jersey, has been launched today.
A new Director of Safeguarding is being sought to work across the Government of Jersey and help to lead the biggest transformation in children’s outcomes for a generation.
The role is being announced today as part of the Let’s Be Honest international and local recruitment campaign that was launched, in March, in a bid to build a more permanent and highly-skilled workforce of social workers. The Let’s Be Honest campaign has already attracted interest from more than 300 social workers from across the UK and elsewhere.
This new role is being created as part of the Government of Jersey’s objectives to improve the safeguarding of vulnerable children.
The Director General for Children, Young People, Education and Skills, Mark Rogers, said: "This new role will be at the heart of our Pledge to Jersey’s Children and Young People to help us to provide the greatest level of safety and protection for our children. Our Pledge makes children’s safety and welfare an Island-wide matter. It goes beyond Children’s Services and places responsibility on every part of the public sector.
"The Government of Jersey’s ambition is for our Island to be the best place for children to grow up in. But we recognise that progressing from historic failings and also addressing ongoing challenges isn’t proving easy. Our practices, systems, processes and reputation all need improving, which is a long-term endeavour – but it’s one that simply has to happen. That makes this role as Director of Safeguarding absolutely crucial. Together, as one determined team, we can create the brightest future out of a traumatic past."
