Group Director of Modernisation and Digital appointed

01 July 2019

The Government of Jersey has today announced the appointment of a Group Director of Modernisation and Digital.

Sitting within the Chief Operating Office, the role will develop and deliver the digital strategy for the Government of Jersey, including how we use innovative technologies to deliver agile, efficient and effective public services.

Gary Bowles joins the Government from UBS Jersey, where he was the Executive Director and Head of Technology for Jersey and the Bahamas. He has more than 20 years’ experience at director level in information technology roles.

His previous senior roles in Jersey organisations include Group Director for Itex, Chief Technology and Transformation Officer for Kleinwort Benson and Information Systems and Technology Director for Mourant.

John Quinn, Chief Operating Officer, said: “This is a key role at the heart of the Government’s plans to transform services to islanders and deliver efficiencies. It’s great that we’ve attracted someone with Gary’s experience from Jersey’s IT community. He brings a wealth of knowledge, both of the island and of technology enabled transformation, which will be invaluable to the delivery of our digital strategy.”

Speaking about his new role, which he starts in October, Mr Bowles said: “The Government of Jersey has ambitious plans to enable change through new and innovative ways of working. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to make such an important contribution to my community, ensuring that the customer perspective is at the forefront of the development of services.”

The appointment follows the Jersey Appointments Commission code of conduct for fair and open competition, and was made following a combination of face-to-face interviews and extensive and evidence-based technical and psychometric assessments. The interview panel included subject matter experts and independent Jersey members.
