Islanders can find out more about the Government Plan and speak to Ministers about their proposals this week, when the first in a series of public meetings takes place.
The meetings have been arranged for islanders to find out more about the proposed Government Plan 2020-23, which is due to be debated by the States Assembly on 26 November. Although each meeting will focus on one of the Common Strategic Priorities agreed by the States Assembly, islanders can ask Ministers about any aspects of the Government Plan proposals.
The first meeting on Wednesday will be at the RJAHS from 6.30pm to 8pm and will focus on the Government priority to ‘protect and value our environment’. The Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré, will be joined by the Assistant Chief Minister, Deputy Carolyn Labey, the Minister for the Environment, Deputy John Young, and the Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis.
The Council of Ministers published Jersey’s first-ever Government Plan in July. It is the first time for many years that both income and spending proposals have been brought together into one comprehensive, costed plan.
The Plan proposes increased spending, but also to achieving £100 million worth of efficiencies over four years, which will keep spending below the forecasts in Budget 2019.
Each of the public meetings will focus on one of the priorities agreed by the States Assembly:
- we will put children first
- we will improve Islanders’ wellbeing and mental and physical health
- we will create a sustainable, vibrant economy and skilled local workforce for the future
- we will reduce income inequality and improve the standard of living
- we will protect and value our environment
Senator Le Fondré said: “These meetings are opportunities for members of the public to understand more about the proposed Government Plan and hear directly from the Ministers. I hope that as many people as possible will attend.”
The meetings will be led by Ministers, who will provide a summary of the Plan and then answer questions from the audience.
