National Careers Week events to begin at Skills Jersey

Islanders interested in careers in hospitality, finance, technology, retail and engineering are being encouraged to attend a series of events this week.

Skills Jersey have set up a range of talks about careers for National Careers Week, which runs from today (Monday 4 March) to Saturday 9 March, and coincides with National Apprentice Week, which is also from today until Friday 8 March.

The public talks will offer insight into some of Jersey’s most popular business areas including Hospitality, Finance, Retail and Technology. Talks are open to the public at Skills Jersey, Bermuda House and will be roughly 30 minutes long.

Skills Jersey offer support with apprenticeships in various sectors across Jersey’s businesses. The talks will reflect some of the areas which people can gain apprenticeship experience in and there will be advisors at the events to help answer any questions or support further interest. 

Chief Executive Officer of the Jersey Hospitality Association, Simon Soar will be giving a talk on tonight (Monday 4 March) at 17.45 about his background in the hospitality industry covering his time as a brand manager, chef, cocktail bartender, consultant and general manager before his role as Chief Executive.

Stuart Penn from Skills Jersey said: “These are the types of events Skills Jersey are looking to run throughout the year.  The Skills Show is an amazing event of the Island’s children, parents and career changers but now we have our premises at Bermuda house we want to continuously promote and educate everyone on the skills and careers available on our wonderful island”.

  • Tuesday 5 March - 17.45 Ben Dixon a senior Finance Consultant at EY will discuss the future of the workplace and job market

  • Tuesday 5 March - 18.30 Nicolle Maltwood an Ecosystem Manager from Barclay’s Eagle Lab will talk about careers in the Tech Industry
  • Wednesday 6 March - 17.45  Lorie Rault, Chief Executive of the Jersey Retail Association will introduce what a day in retail is really like
  • Wednesday 6 March - 18.30  Darren Sowney Project Manager at Geomarine will talk about a career in Civil Engineering
