Fire safety advice: Stay Home Stay Safe

29 April 2020

While Islanders spend more time at home during the Stay Home measures, the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service warn that increased time spent indoors can increase the risk of fires.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service are advising Islanders on how to stay safe within their homes by following these five steps:

1. Fit smoke alarms:

  • Alarms should be regularly tested and working
  • At least one alarm should be in the hallway leading the way out of the home
  • With many electrical items found in living rooms and bedrooms, smoke alarms should also be located in every used room
  • Battery operated alarms are available at most hardware stores or online

 2. Look While You Cook:

  • Take extra care in the kitchen, over 36% of all local fires in the home relate to cooking
  • Stand by the pan and don’t get distracted or leave it unattended
  • Take care when drinking alcohol and cooking

3. Check your electrics:

  • Over 32% of fires in the home are caused by faulty electrics or appliances
  • Register goods at www.registermyappliance.org.uk to ensure information is received of any defects or product re-calls

4. Nightly safety checks:

  • Turn off electrics at the socket of items not being used
  • Don’t overload sockets
  • Don’t turn on washing machines, tumble dryers or dishwashers over-night
  • Close internal doors at night

5. Plan a safe escape:

  • Families and households should make a fire escape plan in case it’s needed one day and practice it

Station Commander Ryan Hall said: “It is important during these unprecedented times that we stick together and keep ourselves safe while staying at home. There is an increased risk for fires within the home, simply because we are spending more time there and using our electrical products and appliances more. Jersey’s emergency services are asking that we ‘Stay home, Stay safe’ and this is your chance to make a difference and protect each other.”
