Visits to cease at La Moye Prison

25 March 2020

Coronavirus: Latest news

The States of Jersey Prison Service (SoJPS) has today (Wednesday 25 March) suspended all social visits for prisoners and is restricting access to the prison by all none essential visitors.

This step has been taken to follow the Government of Jersey health guidelines and social distancing requirements to help minimise the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

During this time, prisoners will be able to undertake video visits with their family members, the SoJPS has installed further terminals and will be providing inmates with free access to ensure that they are able to maintain important family contact. Prisoners also have access to contact their family members through their in-cell phones.

Nick Cameron, Governor and Head of the States of Jersey Prison Service commented: "These measures are vital to protect the health of our staff and prisoners, in particular those over 65 or with existing health conditions. We all have a part to play in keeping our Island safe at this challenging and uncertain time and helping to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

"We are keeping the Independent Prison Monitoring Board (IPMB) informed of all measures we are taking to look after the well-being of prisoners and our staff."

Vivien Vibert, IPMB Chair added: "We will continue to monitor how the States of Jersey Prison Service looks after the welfare of prisoners during these difficult times and to respond to prisoner requests, within the inevitable constraints that have and will come into effect."
