Weddings to recommence under strict conditions

20 May 2020

Couples in Jersey wishing to marry or have a civil partnership will be able to do so from 1 July. Both religious and civil ceremonies will recommence from this date but must comply with the current Government health advice and the guidelines on the opening of churches.

Currently, Islanders are permitted to be outside their homes for up to six hours each day and meet with up to five people who are not from their household, provided they maintain strict physical distancing of at least two metres.

Yesterday, States Members approved amendments to the Law allowing the Office of the Superintendent Registrar to complete the application process with couples via video, in place of the usual face-to-face requirement. This change is designed to protect the health of both couples and staff.

Superintendent Registrar, Claire Follain, said “We recognise that the public health restrictions in place will mean that many couples will need to amend their wedding plans.”
The Dean of Jersey, the Very Reverend Michael Keirle, said “This is a challenging time for us all and I understand how disappointing it is to have your wedding plans disrupted. However, we look forward to helping couples to join together in marriage within the confines of the current guidelines, whilst protecting the safety of all involved, whilst the coronavirus pandemic continues”.
