Public waste facilities to reopen following relaxation of lockdown

01 May 2020

Islanders will be able to dispose of their garden waste at La Collette Household Green Waste Reception from tomorrow (Saturday, 2 May) following an easing of Stay Home rules.

As part of the gradual reopening of public waste facilities, the Island-wide network of mini-recycling centres will then reopen on Tuesday, and the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre at La Collette will reopen on Wednesday.

Islanders using the public waste facilities will be expected to continue to follow social distancing rules and practice good hygiene. They are also warned to expect significant waiting times at La Collette, where commercial waste continues to be accepted.

Deputy Kevin Lewis, Infrastructure Minister said: “I want to thank Islanders for their patience so far by staying at home. Now that restrictions have begun to be eased, we are pleased to be able to open the facilities. We understand that due to Covid-19 there will be an increased volume of waste to be disposed of on sites that are running with restricted staffing levels.

“I do ask that Islanders exercise patience with when they visit La Collette, we know there will be queues. Staff are working hard to accommodate everyone but because of unprecedented challenges, they will be unable to help unload vehicles during this time. You are advised to only bring small volumes of recycling, and your continued patience is appreciated.”

Important customer information:

  • only one person per car
  • expect delays of more than 1 hour
  • updates on queue times will be given on social media
  • please be considerate to staff
  • customers will need to unload their vehicles themselves - coronavirus precautions mean that staff cannot help
  • social distancing is required at all times
  • please keep your time on site to 10 minutes by loading your vehicle in a way that is easy to unload (i.e. all electricals together, all paper together)
  • no trailers at the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre (HRRC), and anyone with a large load must make an appointment
  • no commercial vehicles – household vehicles only
