HMP La Moye reindeer return

09 November 2020

Prisoners at HMP La Moye have been busy designing hand-made reindeer from recycled wooden pallets to be sold in time for Christmas. The money raised will go towards the costs of housing the prisoners.

Following the success of the 20 reindeers that were made last year, production has been stepped up. The reindeer take four days to make and come in small (£30) and large sizes (£60), male and female.

Small Christmas gifts and decorations are also being made in the prison’s workshop.
Christmas can make prisoners feel lonelier than usual and HMP La Moye recognises the impact this can have on both staff and prisoners. Wings are decorated, Christmas dinner is served, and Christmas Services are delivered by the Prison Chaplaincy and their team of volunteers, along with carol singing. The Education team also deliver a ‘Fun Big Quiz’ which enables those who don’t celebrate Christmas to join in.

Head of Reducing Reoffending, Lesley Harrison said: “The Prison’s hand-made Rudolfs have rapidly become an extremely popular item. With weeks to go until Christmas, the team have been busy getting the production line ready.”

“The hand-made Rudolfs are one of many activities that prisoners do, which are all linked to their individual reintegration plan. They are also employed to work on the wing, including cleaning rooms and serving food.

“They also take on education and vocational training which enables them to develop skills and gain experience to support their reintegration back into the community. This ultimately helps reduce reoffending.”

Islanders who would like to order a reindeer should contact Lesley Harrison, at l.harrison2@gov.je.
