Young people and parents to ‘Ask the Experts’ on vaccination

07 October 2021

On Tuesday 12 October at 7pm, the Government will be hosting an 'Ask the Experts: Vaccination Live' event which will be streamed on the Government's social media channels.

The engagement session will be an opportunity for young people, parents and carers to ask questions about the COVID-19 vaccine for young people aged 12 to15 years old, which has been offered as part of Jersey's vaccination programme since Monday 27 September.

The panel comprises experts on vaccination, children's health, children's rights, and education:

  • Dr Ivan Muscat, Deputy Medical Officer of Health
  • Becky Sherrington, Head of the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme
  • Deborah MacMillan, Children's Commissioner for Jersey
  • Mark Rogers, Director General of Children, Young People, Education and Skills (CYPES)
  • Dr Owen Hughes, Consultant Paediatrician

Head of the Vaccination Programme, Becky Sherrington, said: "This is a great opportunity for young people or parents and carers who have questions about the vaccine to have a opportunity to discuss them.

"A campaign on vaccination for young people aged 12-15 is underway, including a letter from Doctor Muscat that has been sent to all parents and carers of young people aged 12-15 years old, alongside information leaflets and a video, however it's important to ensure we're making ourselves as accessible as possible to Islanders who have any questions.

"I'm really delighted that the Children's Commissioner for Jersey, Deborah MacMillan, and the Director General of CYPES, Mark Rogers, will be part of the panel to ensure the important issues of children's rights and education have representation. The vaccination team has been working closely with the Children's Commissioner and CYPES on our offering of vaccination for 12 to 15 year olds, and I'd like to thank them for their continued support.

"It's been hugely encouraging to see so many young people coming through the vaccination centre since appointments opened just over a week ago, and I hope that as many young people as possible are able to tune in to this event and put their questions to us."

Questions can be submitted through www.sli.do using the code 445566 in advance of the event or live on the evening.
