GBJ sign to remain for Jersey registered vehicles

24 September 2021

Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) have clarified that Jersey registered vehicles will not be changing the GBJ distinguishing sign on their vehicles when travelling abroad, despite changes coming into force in the UK.

A distinguishing sign is the mark that shows which country the car is registered.

Earlier this year, the UK confirmed that the distinguishing sign required on vehicles when travelling abroad would switch from 'GB' to 'UK'. This does not apply to Jersey registered vehicles which will continue to use the GBJ sign.

Head of DVS, Gordon Forrest, said: "Following a change in requirements for GB registered vehicles in the UK, I would like to clarify again that Islanders whose cars are registered in Jersey and have the GBJ distinguishing sign do not need to take any action.

"We have received a large number of queries recently with Islanders concerned about what they need to do when travelling in France or other countries, I would like to reiterate that the change only applies to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and will not extend to us in Jersey."

Meanwhile, residents who intend to live in Jersey for more than 12 months are reminded they are required to register any foreign vehicle brought with them to the Island, and obtain a Jersey driving licence. This can be done via a parish hall and online at gov.je
