Islanders share their stories for Mental Health Awareness Week

10 May 2021

Jersey's Mental Health Network is launching a series of videos featuring Islanders discussing their mental health journeys, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week (Monday 10-Sunday 16 May).

The short videos showcase Islanders talking about their feelings and how they overcame barriers to seeking help.

Chairman of Jersey's Mental Health Network, Steve Bougeard, said: "The more ways people can get help for their mental wellbeing the better. We want to encourage and enable people to be able to ask for help before their problems get too big. Seeking help and acting early are vital in helping mental wellbeing.

"These short videos are incredibly inspiring and we are very grateful to those who took part for opening up and sharing their stories with everyone. By sharing their mental health journeys, we hope that Islanders will begin to talk to people about their mental wellbeing and to seek help where it's needed."

"By working together as a Mental Health Network, we're making sure that when people ask for support, they get it as quickly as possible. We're all working together, so whoever you choose to contact, they will get you the help and support you need."

Islanders who feel anxious, overwhelmed or depressed should contact the Mental Health Network, which includes services from all over Jersey, including charities, businesses and health and community services who are all working closely together to ensure that Islanders are able to quickly and easily get the help that's right for them.

Islanders can visit www.gov.je/mentalhealthnetwork to seek support.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, the Government has also published a draft Emotional Wellbeing and Health Strategy, which will overhaul and improve the mental health services available for children and young people. Individuals and organisations are being asked to give their views on their strategy, which will reduce waiting lists and provide more cohesive support.

The Government is committed to improving Islanders' wellbeing and mental and physical health. For more information, on the support available, visit www.gov.je/health/mental/Pages/index.aspx.
