Applications invited for BA Social Work Degree

28 July 2021

Islanders who want to start or further their career in social work have until Monday 23 August to apply for a place on the BA (Hons) Social Work (Jersey) degree course, starting this September.

The course - which is run by University College Jersey at Highlands College - is offered in partnership with the University of Sussex, who co-teach the course, alongside local lecturers. It is suitable for people who want to work with children or work with vulnerable adults.

Students study on-Island, with a mixture of academic study, and 200 days of practice learning, where they can apply theory to real-world practice. Students will learn law, policy and practice in Jersey, and look at best practice in other jurisdictions.  In addition, they'll develop the legal knowledge they need to work in the Island.

The on-Island degree was launched two years ago, to help build a stable, well-trained workforce, following the recommendations of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry. The first students will graduate in 2022 and be qualified to begin practicing as social workers.

Some students will be eligible for support to help fund their degree and should contact Student Finance for more details.

Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Scott Wickenden "The BA (Hons) Social Work (Jersey) degree is a significant investment by Government in making sure that we progress the recommendation of the Independent Care Enquiry.

"To date, students have been positive about the course. While they've said the course is challenging, they've also told us that guest lectures enable them to see their learning reflected in real life working contexts."

"When the first students graduate next year, we'll have a highly skilled, on-Island workforce, who will be able to provide appropriate help and support for children, young people, and vulnerable adults throughout their lives.

"This continuity will mean that we rely less on agency and temporary staff, and will mean that Islanders can develop more consistent, long-term relationships with their social worker."

More information about the degree is available on the University College Jersey website.

Anyone who is considering applying for the course can contact Beth Abbott for an informal discussion, either by email (bethany.abbot@highlands.ac.uk) or by phone (01534) 608588.
