Deputy Chief Minister's Speech on COVID-19 De Escalation

28 January 2022

I am very pleased that we can today announce that from 00:01 Tuesday morning the legal requirement for wearing masks will be removed as will the guidance to work from home.

Government-led contact tracing in the community, businesses and schools will end on 7th February.

Ministers have also made the decision to suspend the Safer Travel Policy from Monday 7th of February.

This change will mean that all people arriving in Jersey will no longer need to fill out a pre-departure form or be tested on arrival, and travel to Jersey will return to pre-pandemic arrangements.

Removing our border testing will make it easier for families to visit and see loved ones, for students to return home, for visitors to once again travel freely and for friends to reconnect.

Our pioneering Safer Travel Policy received international recognition. I would like to thank every member of the team who have worked so hard to design, manage and operate our border policies and to the travellers whose patience and understanding added to its success.

The announcements we are making today are in line with the very latest advice from our Scientific and technical advisers and our public health officials,  and reflect the much lower levels of risk now posed to our community.

I know that these relaxations have been long anticipated and I am sure they will be welcomed by many as we move towards the end of the pandemic.

Businesses and islanders from all sectors of the economy have worked incredibly hard to accommodate the mitigations introduced as our response to Covid-19 and I would like to pay tribute to all those who have risen to the challenge; to all the businesses that have demonstrated their resolve and adaptability, which has enabled the vast majority of jobs to be protected throughout the pandemic. I remain confident that we can continue to rebuild our economy with a real purpose.

Thank you all.
