Education Minister meets with Victoria College students

21 February 2022

The Minister for Education has met with students from Victoria College to further discuss food poverty in the Island.

The meeting follows a letter from the College's food poverty action group, and a reply from the Minister.

The students of the Food Poverty Advocacy Group said: "It's been useful to understand in more detail the challenges that exist such as the need for planning permission and building work in most schools to make this possible.

"We look forward to seeing hot meals rolled out across primary schools by the end of the year and a roadmap for secondary schools in the near future."

Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Scott Wickenden, said: "I'm really pleased I was able to meet with Victoria College students and discuss the issues around food poverty, and some of the challenges we face in tackling it.

"We discussed a range of issues, including the progress of the pilot programme in primary schools, and potential work we could do to support disadvantaged students in secondary schools.

"I'd like to thank the students for taking the time to meet me, and reassure them that we are continuing work to ensure that the option of a hot meal at lunchtime can be extended to all of our primary schools."
