Modern Methods of Construction letters sent to developers

20 October 2022

The Chief Minister, Deputy Kristina Moore, has written to two States-owned entities in relation to using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) in two key upcoming housing developments.

MMC is a generic term used to describe a building process which uses modular units manufactured off site as a fast way of delivering new buildings. It maximises the efficient use of materials, the construction workforce and resources.

In the first letter, the Chief Minister confirms Andium Homes as the preferred developer for the redevelopment of the St Saviour’s Hospital site, with an expectation that they “will seek to maximise the effective use of Modern Methods of Construction”.

In the second letter, Deputy Moore acknowledges that the Jersey Development Company is now “committed to much greater use of Modern Methods of Construction, with an emphasis on volumetric modular forms, as part of the regeneration of South Hill.”

The issuing of the two letters follows the release of the “Modern Methods of Construction: Housing Delivery Innovation” report, published by the Minister for Housing and Communities, Deputy David Warr.

Plans for creating prefabricated homes to help address the housing crisis is one of the actions of the 100 Day Plan.

Deputy David Warr said: “I’m excited about these developments at St Saviour’s Hospital and South Hill, and it is particularly pleasing to have the Chief Minister’s support for increased use of Modern Methods of Construction. This will help us to deliver much-needed new homes more quickly and efficiently.

"The construction industry is already doing excellent, innovative work and it’s important we continue to look at new ways of working and technologies, and that we do this in partnership with our States-owned entities and the wider construction sector.”
