Obesity, Diet and Physical Activity Profile published

​The Obesity, Diet and Physical Activity report 2021 has been published by the Public Health Intelligence team. 

This report presents information on obesity, diet and physical activity drawn together from a variety of sources for Jersey. 

Key findings in the report include: 

  • self-reported survey data suggest around half of adults in Jersey were classified as “normal weight” (47%), whilst one third (32%) were overweight, and 18% were obese
  • around 1 in 4 (22%) people had a waist measurement resulting in a very high cardio-vascular risk factor
  • at year end 2021, there were 9,380 adults on the GP obesity register
  • amongst children, 1 in 4 reception aged children were overweight or obese and 1 in 3 Year 6 were overweight
  • in 2021, over two thirds (69%) of adults in Jersey had eaten less than the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day
  • the proportion of young people who ate 5 portions of fruit and vegetables decreased with age; from 38% in Year 4 to just 18% in Year 12
  • around half (52%) of adults in Jersey reported meeting the recommended guidelines for physical activity 
  • around 4 out of 5 young people were not meeting the UK NHS recommended levels for physical activity 

The report also includes information on obesity-related hospital admissions and prescriptions items for the treatment of obesity. Some of the data has been published previously by Statistics Jersey and Public Health Intelligence but has been brought together from various sources for this profile, to provide a comprehensive reference document for Jersey’s data around obesity, diet and physical activity.
