Springfield improvements deadline extended

21 March 2022

Earlier this year, work began on a number of spectator improvements to the stadium at Springfield, including enhancements to the spectator experience, better accessibility for people with disabilities and changes to the fencing, in line with the requirements of the English Football Association.

While some of the work has been progressing well, ongoing issues with Covid-19 and the supply and delivery of key materials, in particular steel, have caused unavoidable delays to the work.

As a result of these supply issues, the English Football Association Ground Grading Sub-Committee has extended the deadline from the end of March to 23 April, after which the league will inspect the ground.

The Sub-Committee acknowledged that the Island had faced challenges during the pandemic and that the Club and the Government had made significant progress.  It specifically acknowledged that there had been no periods of 'inactivity' on their parts.

The Assistant Minister for Sport, Deputy Hugh Raymond, said: "I am delighted and grateful to the English FA Ground Grading Sub-Committee for granting the new deadline for achieving a ground standard of Grade F.

"The Government of Jersey has commissioned additional work to achieve a higher grading, up to and including Step Three of the English league football, which will ensure Springfield Stadium can continue to serve the whole of the Football community well into the future.  The additional work, including routine maintenance, will continue until late June.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Government Project Team and the contractors who have worked hard to ensure this project could happen; the new fencing is now on island and installation well underway."

The work being undertaken from April onward will not require the pitch to be closed.  All users can start using the pitch again from 1 April.  However, standing will not be available till after 23rd April due to work continuing beyond the spectator railing.
