Jersey included in UK-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA)

28 February 2022

Jersey has been included in the UK's new trade deal with New Zealand, following the signing of the Agreement today.

Jersey is included within the Trade deal for goods-related chapters from day 1. The FTA also includes explicit provision for other chapters in the agreement – such as services – to be extended to the Island in the future.

As with the recent Australia deal Jersey's inclusion in this agreement supports our obligations under the Jersey-UK Customs Arrangement, and accords with the principles endorsed by the States Assembly for FTA participation on 23 November 2021.

Minister for External Relations, Senator Ian Gorst, said: "We welcome the news today that the UK has signed a Free Trade Agreement with New Zealand. It's a deal which includes Jersey for trade in goods and has provision to be extended to us in other sectors as well if we wish.

"The option to extend other chapters of the agreement - such as services and digital – lays the basis for further opportunities for our Island in the future, including access to new markets for our local economy. By engaging and participating in these negotiations we increase our presence and visibility on the international stage.

"I would like to thank all parties for their continuing efforts throughout these negotiations and ensuring Jersey's interests are represented."
